I titled this review excellent because I used that word so many times while reading this book. I loved the reference that "we'll see, usually means no in Mom language." Danny wearing the eye patch and talking like a pirate was excellent, as was the illustration of Danny crossing his fingers as the 3rd place winner of the movie contest was announced. Yes, excellent is the perfect descrition of this book. The book has a great feel to it, excellent for read alongs. This is a great book for children to read or for parents to read to their children. It has a great message. It shows siblings getting along and working together, parents interacting with their children, and of course, the good old library (a childs best friend on long summer days). The illustrations are wonderful. They really capture the the feel of the story. The colors are bright and eye catching. This is just an all around great book, that is sure to have a home on every families bookshelf soon.

A Reel Cool Summer eBook Martha Rodriguez Joey Rodriguez Reviews

In A Reel Cool Summer, author Martha Rodriguez spins a well-crafted story for children that encourages imagination and teamwork as a way to overcome boredom. How novel! In a techno driven world, the delightful tale of Joey and his siblings teaches children in an easy to understand, enjoyable way, they have everything they need to turn a hot, boring summer day, or any day of the year, into a fun-filled adventure, and all they need is a little imagination. When the three sibings decide to enter a contest to make a home-movie, Rodriguez doesn't take the anticipated route which would result in the siblings taking first place in the contest, instead, she masterfully uses this as an opportunity to subtly teach that it isn't always winning first place that will bring the most joy. I particularly appreciated that the author didn't try to use razzle dazzle, but chose to focus on the simple things in life that are at any childs disposal to create their own entertainment. If you are looking for a fun story for children between the ages of three and ten, A Reel Cool Summer would be a great choice.
Bored on a hot summer day, Joey, his brother Danny and sister Jacqui want something to do. They want a pool, but mom says it cost a lot of money. Finding a flyer on the mail box for a movie competition with the reward of money is what gives Joey a great idea. Getting right to works on props, costumes and filming because they have only a few hours till the deadline. After a couple false starts, things seem to come together till the kids are happy with what they have done. Seeing some of the other entries at the library was fun too, but they really wanted to win. Placing third might be alright after all though.

Just the creation of the movie was something fun for the kids to do. A Reel Cool Summer is full of imagination as well as inspiration of things to do. Play acting is entertaining for the kids and so time consuming that they didn't even realize how quickly the day went by. A great idea for a short or even a long summer project. Quick and easy to read for it's intended age group (6-9 year olds) although the lines of words would have been easier to follow if they would have been in a more traditional block arrangement instead of being staggered like it sometimes was. Fun 'paper cut-out dolls' style of illustrations with muted colors that just seemed to pop out the right way with a story telling power of their own.
A Reel Cool Summer is fun-filled tale about the exciting adventures that await you if you just use your imagination.

It's summertime, it's HOT, and it's boring...what are Joey, Danny, and Jacqui to do? Mom basically said no to the pool idea, so now what? Just when it seems boredom will be the theme this summer, Joey finds a flyer. All the kids have to do is make a movie, but the deadline is only a few hours away. Can they pull it off and come away with the big prize?

I just love this story. As a mom of four, I have heard the "we're bored" statement more times than I can count. A Reel Cool Summer shows kids how to get creative and have fun with what's already available to them around the house. The illustrations are fantastic and the story line is highly entertaining. I definitely recommend picking up a copy.
These kids have an idea for "A Reel Cool Summer" and it's pretty awesome. This was such a cute read for children and the illustrations really made me laugh. If you have kids that you enjoy reading to/with whether you are a parent or teacher then you should check this one out.
Both of my sons are grown, so I don't know a whole lot about what picture books and early readers talk about nowadays, but A Reel Cool Summer by Martha Rodriguez could not be more timely and is a must see for all families with pre-tween children. Those old enough to be inspired by the book to go out and make their own movie or play may benefit the most, but it's never too early to get any child thinking creatively.

While listed at 32 pages, there's plenty going on, from the unique and detailed pictures to the topic of how to overcome boredom on a hot summer day. The children of the story discover that not only is it up to them to entertain themselves, but with a little bit of work, some help from their parents, and aliens (okay, guinea pigs with metal hats) they can make their own movie from scratch.

And thwart the malls of hot flowing lava from destroying the galaxy!

I highly recommend A Reel Cool Summer to show children how to stop those hot summer doldrums, or anytime boredom sets in.
I'm still laughing thinking of some of the antics in this book. My 4 y.o. Godson sat still through parts of it. He pretends to be scared of the pirate and laughs as the pirate reads his lines over again. He loved the artwork and trying to figure out what was going to happen. The down-side to having it on is not being able to see the picture with the words.

His Mom was listening as I read the book to him a second time. She thought that the author caught the way little kids really are perfectly. She too laughed at the pirate's line and even at the little princess.

I think the best way to sum the book up is that it has something for everyone in the family. It is a reelly cool read.
